Book Review for Journey of Awakening and Higher Consciousness by Jane Kim Yu

I received this book for free. This does not impact my review in any shape or form.

Journey of Awakening and Higher Consciousness, Jane Kim Yu, is a spiritual self-help book about learning how to be mindful internally and externally, all the while accepting yourself for who you are and changing the things you can. The book offers a foundation for the author’s techniques, as well as tools on how to carry out those techniques. Yu emphasizes the importance of love in all things as a way to cope with stressors, whether they be in the past or the future.

The book contains aspects of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, alongside mindfulness, that many of my colleagues would enjoy. I do like how Yu encourages the reader to trust themselves and to learn how to accept reality for what it is. However, while the book isn’t bad per say, there was a lot of love and light talk that made me cringe. I felt she could’ve been more vulnerable as to show why this method works. It was like she was hiding behind a veneer of positivity, telling us something works while not showing us how or even why. It lacks authenticity. I appreciate the coping skills towards the end of the book as well, but you can find these suggestions in other books.

For now, I’m going to give this book a 3 out of 5 stars.
